Communities and Climate change: from commitment to action, COP25, Madrid, 11 December 2019

12/12/2019

The main livelihoods of local communities in the world’s most vulnerable areas are based on exploitation of natural resources. These are a major asset for the development of agriculture, livestock, fisheries, forestry resources and tourism. The combination of climate and anthropogenic factors has resulted in the degradation of the vegetation cover, soil and water resources, compromising the ability of ecosystems to meet the needs of the populations living therein. This problem is mainly being felt in the most vulnerable areas of Africa, particularly in the Sahel.

The climate funds emphasize the involvement of local communities affected by adaptation, mitigation and resilience strategies through guides and platforms for taking into account the rights of local communities and indigenous populations.
As an accredited entity to the Adaptation Fund and the GCF, OSS organized a side event in order to propose approaches and methodologies for a better involvement of local populations in the design, implementation and execution of Climate Change adaptation and mitigation activities.

These points were discussed in the presence of the following panelists: M Habib Ben Moussa, Ministry of the Environment, Tunisia ; Prof. Abdoulaye DIA, Executive Secretary, APGMV, Mauritania; Mrs Ndeye Fatou MAR, OSS; Mr David KERKHOFF, Humana People To People and Mr E. Mawusé HOUNTONDJI KODJO, ONG – JVE Benin.
