Raising knowledge on Groundwater: Training session in modeling and exchange of experiences, April 10th-16th, 2019, Hanover, Germany

23/04/2019

In the framework of the "Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Management of Water Resources in Maghreb II (CREM II)" project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ) and implemented by the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in partnership with the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS), a training session on the "Groundwater Modeling System (GMS)" was organized at the headquarters of the Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

The training session enabled the participants (representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries) and the Regional Commissioner for Agricultural Development (RCAD of Kairouan –Tunisia), the Hydraulic Basin Agency (HBA) of Souss Massa (Agadir - Morocco), OSS and BGR, to become familiar with the GMS groundwater modeling software.

Having this software will allow the representatives of RCAD - Kairouan (Tunisia), HBA Souss Massa, OSS and BGR to be better equipped to improve the Nebhana basin model developed in phase 1 of the project, and the updating of the Souss Massa basin model prepared in 2010. This will reinforce the knowledge of the studied aquifer systems and help make predictive simulations as to the impact of the exploitation of aquifers on the water resources.

The exchange of experiences focused on the water drainage system in the mining district of the Harz region, groundwater modeling and groundwater treatment for supplying drinking water to the city of Hanover.
