Conference of the Parties on Climate COP 24: the OSS participation programme

23/11/2018

OSS participated in the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in Katowice, Poland, from 3 to 14th December 2018.

The programme of OSS participation, as an observer member of the UNFCCC conference, included a series of side events on themes of interest to countries in its area of action: ground water resources, sustainable land and water management and climate finance, and an information Booth in partnership with the Déserts du Monde Foundation.

OSS's participation provides an opportunity to strengthen links with its partners and develop further collaborations with its members, with a view to generating, managing and sharing useful and accurate data and information towards environmental governance in the Circum-Sahara in accordance with sustainable development objectives (SDAs) and international agreements on environment and sustainable development (UNFCCC, UNCBD and UNCCD).

Climate COPs aim to reduce the impact of global warming and limit greenhouse gases. One of the most important tasks of the twenty-fourth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) will be to develop and adopt a set of decisions ensuring the full implementation of the Paris Agreement, in accordance with the decisions adopted in Paris (COP21) and Marrakech (CMA1.1). In addition, COP24 will include the "facilitation dialogue" to support the implementation of national commitments.
