The Sahara and Sahel Observatory participates in a workshop organized by the Executive Secretariat of the Niger Basin Authority on "Validation of the analysis report of pollution hotspots and identification of a strategy for collecting and sharing data on water quality in the Niger Basin".
This workshop, organized under component 3 of the ITTAS project, eimplemented by UNIDO, brings together experts from the countries involved in the project (Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Chad), as well as representatives of different basins (Danube, Orange-Senqu River).
It aims to:
- Validate the analysis report of the pollution hotspots in the Niger River basin;
- Identify and plan a strategy for collecting and sharing water quality data in the watershed between member countries and the NBA;
- Share experiences in terms of collecting and sharing water quality data and strategies for identifying pollution hotspots between experts from different basins present at the workshop (Niger, Danube and Orange-Senqu River) .
The ITTAS project, launched in May 2019, aims to "improve IWRM, knowledge-based management and governance of the Niger Basin and the Iullemeden-Taoudéni / Tanezrouft Aquifer System". It is implemented by four agencies, namely: the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS), the Niger Basin Authority (NBA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and UNESCO.
