BRICKS Regional Workshop: Assessment, Prospects & Sustainability of M&E Tools, Products and Services for the Sahel and West Africa programme, Bamako, 29-31 October 2018

29/10/2018

Within the framework of the BRICKS project, the Sahara and Sahel Observatory is organizing, in collaboration with the Mali Natural Resources Management and Climate Change Management Project, a regional workshop on monitoring and evaluation of the Sahel and West Africa national programs  (SAWAP), from 29 to 31 October 2018, in Bamako.

The Opening session of the workshop was provided by the Minister of Environment, Sanitation and Development of Mali Mrs. Aida M'BO KEITA,  with the participation of representatives of national SAWAP projects, in charge of monitoring and evaluation.

The main objective of this workshop is to evaluate the results recorded in the monitoring and evaluation framework of the SAWAP program, to collect lessons learned and to identify strategies for the sustainability of learning outcomes. On the agenda of these days, there is also the restitution of the results of the regional study on the impacts of the investments of SLWM and the definition of an action plan in order to ensure sustainable tools, products and services developed within the framework of the project. An important part of the workshop will be devoted to bilateral exchanges with the national teams regarding the support provided to them by the OSS.

The OSS monitoring and evaluation activities approach consists in setting up regional indicators based on a set of national common indicators to the 12 projects. In this approach, the OSS has integrated the combined use of earth observation data and technologies for the monitoring and mapping of natural resources at lower cost.

The Sahel and West Africa Program - SAWAP is a World Bank program co-financed by the Global Environment Facility, in support of the Great Green Wall Initiative (IGMV), which brings together 12 national projects and advocates for investments in sustainable ecosystems. The program aims to broaden and strengthen the sustainable management of land and water resources in the 12 sub-Saharan countries : Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Togo.

The SAWAP program is supported by the BRICKS project "Strengthening Resilience Through Innovation, Communication and Knowledge Services". BRICKS is a regional umbrella project implemented by CILSS, OSS and IUCN, whose role is to build a regional platform to stimulate exchanges on best practices and successful experiences, for joint actions at the level of the 12 SAWAP countries. It also aims to document the performance of the SAWAP portfolio through a powerful monitoring and evaluation system which is coordinated and implemented by OSS.
