Oss hosted a technical exchange and consultation meeting on the activities of AfriCultuReS project on July 5, 2018. The meeting has been attended by the main partners in Tunisia, including representatives of INRGREF (National Institute of Research in Rural Engineering, Waters and Forests) and CNCT (Centre National de la Cartographie et de la Télédétection).
During this meeting, a presentation of the project, its components and objectives was made to the project's partners, followed by discussions focusing on the work program at the national level in Tunisia. In particular, discussions converged on the selection of the pilot sites, and on the project’s pre-operational phase (identification of Tunisian pilot sites), as well as the project’s operational phase which will allow an upscaling from local level (pilot sites), to national level (Tunisia) which will lead to continental level (Africa).
The Africultures project, is a research project dedicated to strengthening food security in African farming systems with the support of remote sensing. It is expected to enrich decision-making on food security using open source geospatial decision support systems for agriculture.
Funded by the European Union, the project aims to develop and test services in eight pilot areas defined in different countries in Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Mozambique, South Africa, Rwanda and Tunisia. For North Africa, the pilot sites are located in Tunisia.
As coordinator for the North Africa region, OSS designs, implements and demonstrates an integrated agricultural monitoring and early warning system that will support decision-making in the field of food security, with the support of remote sensing.
