North Western Sahara Aquifer System Consultation Mechanism: Exchange workshop on database updating, November 3, 2020

03/11/2020

The Coordination Unit of the North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) Consultation Mechanism holds an exchange workshop on the OSS virtual platform.

The workshop which was opened by Mr. Khatim Kherraz, Executive Secretary of the OSS, and Mr. Hussein Talloua, Coordinator of the Consultation Mechanism, was an opportunity to discuss the DB updating and set the activities for the months to come, in the presence of representatives of the three countries sharing the North Western Sahara Aquifer System (Algeria, Tunisia, Libya) and the OSS.

It is worth reminding that the North Western Sahara Aquifer System Consultation Mechanism was created in 2006, with an OSS-located coordination unit and continues efforts to support and strengthen cooperation between the three countries. It is one of the very few groundwater management mechanisms all over the world.

Its program includes several joint scientific and technical activities, including mainly the database updating and indicators monitoring for the management of the resource shared between the three countries.

The North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) extends over a 1 million km2 area, with current withdrawals amounting to 3 billion m3/year and contains strategic water reserves that could help meet domestic and agricultural needs and the development of the region.
