Training workshop for the monitoring–evaluation system actors of Mauritania’s Sustainable Landscape Management Project - Nouakchott, 23-25 July 2018

OSS organize a training workshop on the establishment of monitoring and evaluation tools in Nouakchott on 23-25 July 2018. Aimed at the monitoring and evaluation experts of Mauritania’s Sustainable Landscape Management Project (PGDP), the workshop will allow to work on spatial data collection, processing and promotion methods with a view to their integration in the project monitoring and evaluation system. 

The training was structured around the following: 

  • Reminder on general notions and concepts related to monitoring and evaluation of natural resources management projects and programs. 
  • Presentation of data collection and database creation tools (GPS, tablets, etc.)
  • Presentation of the Geographic Information System of the PGDP Mauritania project developed in support to ecological monitoring of the project sites 
  • Reminder on the utilization of the SAWAP monitoring-evaluation web platform 
  • Definition of a training plan in support to the project monitoring-evaluation activities  Practical field work on the use of GPS for data collection.

The Mauritania-PGDP is a part of the zone concerned by the Great Green Wall Initiative and is supported by the World Bank-financed Sahel and West Africa Program (SAWAP), which includes 12 national investment projects in support to Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Togo and Chad).

The project aims to strengthen sustainable landscape management (SLM) in targeted productive ecosystems in Mauritania, which present a high potential for the preservation and regeneration of two tree species that play a major role in the country’s economic development (Acacia senegal et Acacia seyal). As such, it is planned to produce gum arabic, non-timber forest products and fodder and to develop ecosystem services through the conservation of biodiversity, soil and water and the storage of carbon in vegetation and soils etc ...).

OSS coordinates the SAWAP monitoring and evaluation component and geospatial services through the Building Resilience through Innovation, Communication and Knowledge Services – BRICKS project. In this framework, OSS accompanies the SAWAP beneficiaries and provides them with support, advice and capacity building actions, in accordance with their need. 

This workshop will be organized in the framework of the contractual support between OSS and SAWAP for the operationalization of the SAWAP monitoring and evaluation system and other related activities.
